The present vase was probably created as a sample for Augustus the Strong made in conjunction with the commissions ordered to decorate his Japanese Palace in Dresden. Other examples of this vase shape can be found in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Wark Collection at the Cummer Museum in Jacksonville, Florida, and the Warda Stevens Stout Collection at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Memphis. A vase of similar form and design, like the present piece, was in the Arnhold Collection and sold in his sale at Sotheby’s, New York, 24 October 2019, lot 303. Another comparable example was formerly with Michele Beiny and is now in a private collection.
