One of the series of Apollo and the Nine Muses modeled by Kändler and presented by Augustus III to Empress Elizabeth I of Russia in conjunction with the St. Andrew service. The gift of the service along with 190 figures and groups for the dessert table arrived in St. Petersburg in July 1745 in time for the wedding of the empress's nephew and heir (the future Peter III) to the Princess Sophie of Anhalt Zerbst (the future Catherine the Great).
Caliope was the mother of Orpheus by Apollo, and was the patroness of epic poetry.
