Pagoda figures designed as incense burners were perhaps the earliest figures produced in porcelain at the Meissen manufactory. They were modeled after late seventeenth century Chinese blanc-de-chine figures of Pu-tai Ho-shang (now called Budai), the corpulent monk. Many variations of the model occur.
